About 15 years ago (and lucky for us!), Mike Osika was searching for a new opportunity to become more involved in his community. He discovered the volunteer program at the Martin House and was immediately attracted by the chance to meet and talk with visitors from all over the world.
Mike started his docent training right away and recalls being inspired by the others enrolled in the program that year – many of whom still lead tours. Today, he too enjoys leading tours but also serves on the training team for new volunteers and helps recertify docents annually.
“I still really enjoy introducing Martin House, one of Buffalo’s greatest assets, to new volunteers and visitors,” said Mike. “What I didn’t realize is that I would meet some of my closest friends along the way.”
We shine a light on Mike’s volunteer work this month for more than his dedication to providing high-quality and engaging tours. Mike continues to uncover ways to assist the Martin House efforts. He is a member of the Volunteer Advisory Committee and represents his volunteer peers as an ex-officio member of the Board of Directors. Always willing to roll up his sleeves, he has helped with special events and has been spotted ringing up sales in the Museum Store.
Born and raised in Buffalo, Mike studied accounting at Canisius College and the University at Buffalo. He has spent more than 25 years working at the local Ethan Allen dealer. He and his husband, Daniel Salcedo, share their home with Lottie, a spoiled Goldendoodle.
What has Mike excited in 2021? “I am a member of a new board committee on Community Relevance, Diversity, and Inclusion. I look forward to participating in this important initiative.”
What keeps Mike engaged? “I enjoy my volunteer work at the Martin House mostly for the people – volunteers, visitors, and the staff. Staff members are warm, friendly, and deeply committed to the site while maintaining an atmosphere that makes people want to continue coming back. I’ve volunteered in many different organizations, and the Martin House is number one in camaraderie among its ranks.”
